Children’s fairy tale art is decorating the Ctěnice Chateau

The exhibited works with the theme of Fairy Tale New Year were created as part of an art competition for elementary school pupils in the regions Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem and Liberec. The competition was organised by the Free State of Saxony’s liaison office in Prague for Czech schools to strengthen ties between Saxon and Czech schools. 32 schools participated in the competition, submitting an unbelievable 611 drawings in total. The winning artist is twelve-year-old Karolína Hrušková from T.G. Masaryk's Primary and Secondary school in Česká Kamenice.

Cinderella returns to Ctěnice

Drawings of fairy tales can be created with any technique. Because Saxony was involved in the competition, the inspiration was the Moritzburg Castle, which has been popular in Germany and the Czech Republic for over 45 years thanks to the famous fairy tale by the director Václav Vorlíček, ‘Three Nuts for Cinderella’ (‘Tři oříšky pro Popelku’). What is the relationship between Ctěnice and Moritzburg, apart from that they are both castles? From autumn 2013 until spring 2014, the City of Prague Museum hosted, along with the Moritzburg Chateau, an exhibition in Ctěnice Chateau dedicated to this famous movie. And so, Cinderella returns to Ctěnice after five years.

Congratulations Karolína

Apart from the winning picture, visitors can see a selection of the best works that entered the competition at the exhibition. Karolína Hrušková was voted as the winner not only by the Free State of Saxony’s liaison office in Prague, but also by the Saxon State Chancellery in Dresden. The winning artist’s school class was rewarded with a day trip to Dresden with a varied program of activities.

A journey through the ages

A trip to Ctěnice is a trip back to ancient history. The oldest record of the village in literature dates from the year 1235, where Sulislav of Ctimic is mentioned. In 1273, Pope Gregory X issued a privilege referring to Ctěnice as the contents of Strahov Monastery. The first reference of the local fortress dates back to 1372, when it was bought by the Prague burgher Jan Zeiselmeister from Gera, Volflin Galma’s widow. The Chateau’s current design is Classicist, and only the moat reminds us of the Gothic fortress that the Chateau once was.
